As many of my friends know, I've been working with the Lakota at Pine Ridge for over 20 years. The character of each American and the collective character of us all is written in our actions current and past. Every time I think my moral compass has been fully calibrated, something informs me of the complexity of the web of causality. Since time is composed conceptually of past, present, and future, we are smart enough to know the story of our country is not complete without addressing the past to ensure a just future, which is determined by our present actions. Our elders were here and their descendents still are. If one doesn't consider them "our," elders we join the ranks of those developing lists of "not one of us," which match our needs to justify exploitation. Simple decency begins with the acknowledgement of their existence. All My Relations
