Congratulations to Jacqueline Lodestro-Helgans and Kaitlyn Jones, recipients of this year’s inaugural Carlin Summer Camp Fund Scholarship awards.
Jacqueline studies music, dance and theatre at NHS. She is a member of Pitch Please, Northwood’s a cappella ensemble, and this spring appeared as Tracy Turnblatt in the NHS production of Hairspray. She will be attending Playmaker’s Summer Youth Conservatory (SYC) for her third summer, which coincidentally will be presenting, Hairspray. She writes, “At SYC, I have experienced various teaching styles from a range of dance, theatre, and vocal instructors. I’ve learned to take time developing characters and making conscious decisions as an actor. Working with passionate people my age has inspired me to perform at my best. I am excited to represent Northwood this summer and come back in the fall with a new collection of knowledge and skills to apply here at school.”
Kaitlyn studies vocal and visual arts at NHS. She is also a member of Pitch Please and appeared in Hairspray this spring. She will attend the UNC Summer Music Camp. Kaitlyn commented in her application, “Music has been part of my life and I love to write music. UNC Music Camp was part of last summer’s vocal experience. The individual and group lessons, plus music theory were outstanding. There I had to audition for Cabaret solo, and I made it. Then at Nothwood, I auditioned for, and earned a place in Pitch Please. This group, along with vocal and music theory classes has advanced my love and education in vocal training. Therefore, I feel very ready to advance and learn even more this summer at UNC.”
The Carlin Summer Camp Fund was established in 2013 to support summer arts experiences for current Northwood students. Modeled on the successful program by sister organziation, the JM Arts Ed Foundation, the Carlin fund compliments the Annual NHSAEF College Scholarships presented to graduating seniors. It is named in honor of longtime Northwood theatre arts instructor and arts department chair, Dr. Lori Carlin. During her 17-year tenure working collaboratively with the distinguished, award-winning arts faculty, Northwood created chapters of honor societies in each arts discipline, invested in a $4.5 million arts wing renovation, established the NHSAEF, and received two Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts School of Excellence Awards.

We are fundraising for NHS ARTS ED FOUNDATION. This year's goal is to present a $500 grant to each of our five arts ed faculty members early in the fall semester—for class supplies, field trips, equipment, music, software—whatever they need. Your gifts are a great investment!
