Update #15 ·

Victory!... thanks to all our supporters

The Vlei has been saved! On 22 March, Deputy Mayor Neilson announced at
our Day of Action and Celebration that the City was cancelling all plans to sell the land for a shopping mall; he also said that City was willing to work with the community on transforming the area in a way that people wanted. This is a great victory for civil society, and a tribute to your support.

However there are still issues of concern:

  • Until the land is rezoned back to public space, and a council resolution has been passed, it is vulnerable. We therefore urge the City to do whatever is necessary to ensure the long-term management and protection of the area. Until this is secured, we need to maintain our vigilance.
  • We have concerns regarding the public money that will be spent on compensating the developer.
  • We need to ensure that the City honours its commitment to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of the area, and takes into account the considerable work that we have done in consulting community groups on this.

Until these issues are resolved, we will not close our Causes page.

We welcome your continued engagement on the future of Princess Vlei. We would like to thank all our supporters for your assistance, persistence and vision. Please watch our short tribute below, or on vimeo
