USDA Wildlife Services plan to round up and kill the remaining wild turkeys in SI in two weeks.

We just found out that the DEC told NY Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis USDA Wildlife Services plan to round up and kill the remaining wild turkeys in SI in two weeks.

The DEC says the only other option is to take the turkeys to a NY sanctuary that can accommodate 50-100 wild turkeys and has high fencing to keep them from escaping. If you know of any sanctuaries that can take them, have them contact Mike Schiavone at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation directly (email [email protected], and copy [email protected]).

The public needs to chime in again, now. $16,000 down the toilet, who knows how much more will cost to kill the rest. A recent Staten Island Advance poll showed that folks don't want the turkeys killed. 

We cannot allow these birds to be slaughtered! PLEASE HELP. We have 2 weeks to get the DEC to reverse course or to get those birds out of there.

There was no transparency or public discussion about the killing of our turkeys either because the powers that be know is wrong and know that the public would object.  These turkeys are companions to many, attract tourists and even have helped people meet & bond with one another.  I have so many happy memories of our turkeys.  They were a real comfort & joy.  Also a learning…
