While stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany in the early 1980s the wife and I were at the house of German friends. They also had some relatives from East Germany visiting them. Everything was going well until the relatives realized that we were Americans. Their eyes got large and with fear and they were ready to run out of the house for fear that their government would find out they spent the evening talking with Americans. After our Host got them settled down and assured them that there were no spies in the neighborhood they actually seemed to enjoy being around the wife and I. We discussed what our America was like and that we had rights which included owning weapons and traveling at our discretion. They on the other hand were not allowed to own weapons and any travels had to be sanctioned by there local government officials. It was an eye opener for all concerned. Without weapons we are subjects, with guns we are free.
