My father was in the Royal Navy from 1954 to 1969. He was one of the ones ordered into the test zone at Christmas Island (1955, on board HMS Cavalier).
He has seen old friends die from what we consider to be illnesses caused as a result of this.
He himself suffers from epilepsy, diabetes and vascular dementia. He also has a very rare stomach illness which is being investigated in regard to his exposure to radiation.
Successive governments have to date refused to acknowledge illnesses suffered by the men (and their children) who were present in the fallout zones and witnessed the testing.
Every other country who sent military personnel into the zones have paid compensation to those involved.
This fight has been going in for the past 60 years and I think it's about time something was done. There are 3000 veterans left, and they deserve better.
