Less than two weeks after launching our pledge on Causes calling on Congress to put a hold on Dr. Jo Ann Rooney's nomination as US Navy undersecretary, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has placed a hold on Dr. Rooney's nomination.
Nearly 500 supporters called on Congress to stop Dr. Rooney's nomination, and our voices were heard loud and clear!
Check out this great article chronicling our win: http://bit.ly/1hHTLK2
Last month, Dr. Rooney in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee, stated that if proposed changes to remove prosecution decisions for sexual assault from the often biased chain of command were made, the result would be "decisions based on evidence rather than the interest in preserving good order and discipline." Dr. Rooney's comment represents a moment of candor from a top military leader and reflects the prevalent attitude of the U.S. military's top brass. It is astounding to hear our military leaders proclaim that service members are not deserving of a system of justice based on the evidence in their case.
Thank you for your continued support and stay tuned for our next campaign in the ongoing fight against the epidemic of military sexual assault!
