We got my buddy home
I'm so happy to share that late Tuesday night Janis Shinwari arrived at Washington's Reagan National Airport, the last leg on a 36-hour journey out of Afghanistan.
Now that Janis is safely in the U.S., he's looking to build a new life here. He wants to help the Afghan interpreters who — like him — joined the American troops in the fight against the Taliban, but are still stuck overseas. Next week he will testify to Congress about his experiences, and about the backlog of applications in the interpreter visa program.
For now, he’s got a place to stay, has bought his first groceries, and has picked out a cellphone. Next, he’s hoping to find work. In the meantime, I set up a fundraising campaign to help him get settled.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all 900+ of you who signed the petition and supported Janis with your kind words. None of this would have been possible without people from around the country speaking up on Janis' behalf and demanding justice. I salute each and every one of you.
