One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling, he said,
“I made a difference to that one.”
This story has inspired one of our long-time volunteers, Dr. Coleman Carter. He ran our chronic disease program which treated our Diabetic and Cardiovascular Disease patients. He has recently retired from the clinic and in his honor, we have established The Starfish Fund to help make a difference in our patient's lives.
Too many times we've heard this from patients: "I'm sorry, didn't buy my medicine because I couldn't afford it." "Have I eaten today? Honey, I haven't eaten anything in two days." "I know I should have gone to the emergency room, but I can't afford to call an ambulance, and I don't have a car."
The Starfish Fund has been set up to allow us to help patients with these sorts of little expenses. Cab fare to the emergency room, $50 for a bottle of insulin or $20 to take to the grocery store for food, these funds would be distributed on an as needed basis to our patients by clinic providers and staff.
Donate as much or as little as you'd like, every little bit helps and our patients will certainly appreciate the assistance.
