As I learned in my doctoral studies in art education, research has shown that when young people experience the arts, their brains develop more well-rounded skills. The arts use a different part of the brain than language and science, so experience in the arts helps them succeed in other academic areas they may want to excel in. As evidence of this I play in a string orchestra made up of medical professionals--doctors and nurses who all played string instruments as children. There is quite a striking correlation between success in music and also in various aspects of science. The arts are an important part of our lives.
