Singapore Airlines is among the top airlines in the world; they have daily commercial and cargo flights into Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Singapore and many major cities in China - these are the shark fins consumption centres of the world - we need to curb the supply of shark fins into these cities.
In 2012, the Hong Kong Government data indicates that over 1,162 tonnes of shark fin were imported into Hong Kong of which 14.1% was by air cargo. Of that percentage a substantial amount would have been flown on Singapore Airlines' flights. According to a July 2013 report by the global wildlife trade monitoring network Traffic, “Singapore was the fourth biggest exporter of shark fins between 2000 and 2009”.
To date several environmentally responsible airlines have supported this initiative by stopping the freight of shark fins and related products. They are Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Korean Airlines, Asiania, Korean Airlines, Lan Chile, Eva Air, AeroMexico, Dragon Air and Fiji Air as well.
We need to encourage Singapore Airlines - the world's most awarded airline to be a good corporate citizen to help by protecting the well being of sharks in our ocean. This instance, we call upon Singapore Airlines to immediately cease transportation of shark fins and related products on all flights. I thank you deeply for your support.
