Not many students can afford to pay for college these days without taking loans. According to, about two-thirds (65.6%) of students graduating with a Bachelor's degree had some debt in 2007-08, with the average student loan debt of $23,186.

Rep. Virginia Foxx has come out on record against having any tolerance for people with student loans. How many students do you think that includes? "I went through school, I worked my way through, it took me seven years, I never borrowed a dime of money. [...] I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that." Today's students are in a different situation from when Rep. Foxx graduated in 1968.
