Berkin Elvan

Berkin Elvan (14) left home to buy a loaf of bread on 15 June. He was hit by a tear gas cannister aimed at his head. His family was threatened after refusing to hand in his clothes and personal belongings to the police. He is still in critical condition.

People of his neighbourhood wanted to hold a rally today from Okmeydanı to Istanbul Courthouse to demand justice for his attackers. The police said they will not allow the march and attacked with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The protesters responded back by putting up barricades and throwing stones and molotov cocktails to keep the riot police out. Heavy clashes continued throughout the day until around 11pm. 5 people were taken into custody by the police, 3 of whom are children.

Demonstrations spread to other districts of Istanbul and Ankara, as well as the cities of Eskişehir and Antakya, where a 22-year-old man lost his life a few minutes ago after being hit in the head with a tear gas canister used as a projectile.
