BELTHANGADY | MANGALORE : The Karnataka Prajadhikara Vedike, a forum of state level voluntary associations, has strongly condemned the Belthangady police action of filing an FIR against the Vedike convener and Nagarika Seva Trust President K Somanath Nayak without any preliminary investigation into the complaint which has made baseless allegations against him in the Sowjanya rape and murder case. The Vedike, in a press communique, has made it clear that it would democratically fight the forces that are trying to curb freedom of expression of the Trust which has been fearlessly fighting for the cause of the common man and the oppressed sections of the society. It has also said it would not tolerate attempts to curb Freedom of Press. The Vedike said it fully backed the demand of the various voluntary associations, family of Sowjanya as well as political parties for a CBI probe not only into the Sowjanya case but also into the 434 cases of suicides and 16 cases of murders reported from Dharmasthala in the past 11 years. The Vedike has said it would appeal to the Union and State Human Rights Commissions, Women's Commission, Child Rights Protection Commission and the chief minister in this regard and would also create awareness on the issue in the society. The Vedike has also convened an emergency meeting in this regard at Guruvayanakere to discuss its future course of action, a press communiqué said.
