Update #1 ·

US-based companies like Defense Technology and Nonlethal Technologies are making a fortune off of these protests...

Thanks for signing the petition! We’re asking that you now help strengthen our demands by inviting your friends to sign the petition asking three members of Congress to stand up against the use of tear gas and police violence in Turkey.

Since the beginning of Turkey’s popular uprising on May 31st, the world has been talking about tear gas—a common name for a class of toxic chemical weapons that can result in tears, trouble breathing, nausea, and vomiting, and has been linked to serious health problems, sometimes resulting in death.

On June 15, the Turkish Doctors Association reported that 5 people have died during the protests, 7478 have been injured, and 10 people have lost eyes as a result of being shot by police using tear gas canisters. At least one of these deaths, and a large number of the injuries, have been caused by tear gas.

Despite the danger, since Gezi Park was cleared by government forces not long over a week ago, people have continued to take to the streets in demonstrations and public forums in neighborhoods all over Turkey. In response, the daily Milliyet newspaper reports that the Turkish government will place an order for 100,000 new tear gas canisters along with 60 water cannon vehicles to repress the uprisings.

This means that US-based companies like Defense Technology and Nonlethal Technologies are making a fortune off of these protests, as these manufacturers of so-called “riot control agents” are banking on the possibility that their line of products will meet the “market demand” for them.

The International Federation for Human Rights has called on the international community to suspend the sale of tear gas to Turkey and the protesters themselves have also made this call for solidarity.

This is our moment to help direct public attention to the reasons for ending the use of tear gas and related chemical weapons.

If you have any information on this latest shipment of tear gas and water cannon vehicles, please send an email to: [email protected].
