"The Misunderstood Sea Turtle" - Come to the final public comments meeting on Wed.
Based on what we heard at the last meeting, the problem is that people just don't understand the issue or what is being asked of them regarding sea turtle / people friendly lighting and are being misguided by forces that have different business visions for the future of Ft. Lauderdale that is more Miami and less natural. There is a misconception being spread that residents are being asked (or told) to live in the dark, which could not be further from the truth! The truth is that people see better and are safer with turtle friendly/people friendly lighting. But there is an obvious effort to rile up residents against any ordinances by scaring them into believing these lies.
The truth is that there is so much skyglow on the beach that volunteers don't even need flashlights on the beach to rescue hatchlings. If a bright light in your face really helped you to see better, then cars would not come with sun visors and hats would not be needed shield the sun to see better in broad daylight. All that is being asked of residents is the same concept. If we simply shield the light downward to light what is on the ground, not the sky, everyone is safe and happy, including the turtles. It is being done in nearly every other coastal community in Florida with great success. It is really not as difficult as they are making it sound.
Furthermore, why should anyone be allowed to shine light onto someone else's property anymore than they can blast loud music? Pollution and trespass are the same regardless if it is trash, noise or light.
Please come to show your support for sea turtles at this next and final meeting the City will be hosting on this hot issue. If you cannot attend, please share the petition so we can deliver as many signatures as possible to the commissioners at the meeting.
