Update on July 13, 2012
A big thank you to all of you who’ve pledged to boycott these harmful products! This is a crucial moment for us to make our voices heard, as Congress continues to draft a Farm Bill that will have huge ramifications for our food safety and ultimately, our health. The chemical industry's allies in Congress are attempting to add policy riders to the bill that would abandon the few laws that now exist to protect Americans from the damaging effects of genetically engineered (GE) crops. Proven to cause significant harm to agriculture and the environment, GE crops are engineered to withstand herbicides like Monsanto's Roundup. Additionally, over the past few years these crops have steadily increased the overall use of herbicides in the U.S by 382 million lbs, leading to the emergence of herbicide-resistant superweeds and endangering the safety of our food supply. In response to the newly proposed statutes, the Huffington Post accuses Congress of letting Monsanto, and other leading brands in the chemical industry, “write their own rules.”
With its tens of millions of lobbying dollars, we cannot allow these companies to continue placing their own profit margin above our assurance of a healthy, regulated, food supply. Keep inviting your friends to take the pledge, showing the House Agriculture Committee and other members of Congress that, as American consumers, we care about the safety of our food and environment!
