Update on June 28, 2012
Thank you for signing the petition! It is the concerted efforts of people like you that is improving the quality of legal representation for the countless Americans who can’t afford a lawyer to defend them in court.
Just last week, Washington state’s Supreme Court set limits on the number of cases that public defenders may take on each year. The new caseload standards prevent public defenders from handling more than 150 felony cases per year or 300 to 400 misdemeanor cases. Subsequently, Washington hopes to reduce the number of innocent people convicted as a result of poor legal aid at the hands of overextended lawyers.
This is a great step in the right direction, but we still want to push for increased budgets for Legal Services. Keep inviting your friends to sign the petition and together we can ensure that inadequate funding is never a reason that justice is not provided for all Americans.
