Update on June 26, 2012
You’ve all spoken out about Big Tobacco’s misleading advertising tactics against Proposition 29, California’s $1-a-pack cigarette tax hike. Last week public health took a major blow as the ballot initiative - which would have raised about $810 million a year for cancer research and antismoking programs - failed to overcome a nearly 28,000-vote deficit.
The defeat hails a victory for the expensive campaign that major cigarette companies ran against the tax, setting a dangerous precedent for future anti-smoking legislation pushes in other states.
We must continue to fight back against Big Tobacco’s efforts to spread falsified information about anti-smoking measures like Prop. 29. Invite your friends to sign the petition, holding these shameful companies accountable!
