Thank you for signing the petition to demand that the FDA require labeling for foods containing GMOs! We still need your help to reach our goal of 5,000 signatures. GMOs affect all of us, so invite your friends to take action, too: http://bit.ly/Kn8327.
It is difficult to avoid foods with GMOs; fortunately, the Produce Marketing Association is trying to help. You have probably noticed the stickers on your fruits and veggies. These are called PLU (Price Look Up Code) stickers and they contain important information about your food’s origins:
- A sticker with a 4-digit number beginning with a 3 or 4 means it was ‘conventionally grown’, i.e. with the use of chemical pesticides.
- A sticker with a 5-digit number beginning with an 8 means it was genetically-engineered, perhaps for a brighter color. These foods were also likely sprayed with chemical pesticides.
- A sticker with a 5-digit number beginning with a 9 means it is organic.
