"Promoting Mother-Baby Friendly Maternity Care"

January 5, 2013

Thanks to a generous donation of $3000.00 from The Carolyn K. Tribe Foundation to Wholistic Midwifery School of Southern California DBA The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health, we will be able to continue to do our important work serving disadvantaged families in Los Angeles. In 2013, thanks to a donation, a Perinatal Support Specialist Training will be offered for the whole community, and a Community-Based Doula Program will be launched providing prenatal, labor, postpartum and breastfeeding support for low-income families obtaining care in community and public health clinics.

Thanks to a donation last year from The Laurence H, Tribe Charitable Trust, we were able to develop and conduct a Perinatal Support Specialist Course for UCLA's Neighborhood Mother-Mentor Program, a community-based participatory research study conducted by UCLA's Dr. Mary Jane Rotherman-Borus, which is underway in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles to study the impact of peer support in lowering the rates of Gestational Diabetes in Latina and Korean pregnant women.

The Perinatal Support Specialist Course will be offered in Spring 2013. If you are working in a community-based organization, clinic or hospital and would like to have a dedicated team of trained doulas to support your patients, please contact us to find out how your agency can sponsor this course.

Work-study and partial scholarships will be available for low-income persons who wish to receive this training. Persons of African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian ethnicities with linguistic capabilities in Spanish and Asian languages are encouraged to apply.
