It's a bad year for influenza! Google flu map as at 24 December 2012.

The Google Flu map is a pretty good indicator of the severity of the flu season. And this year looks to be the most intense for influenza since Google started the flu trends project in 2006. The flu season usually peaks in February and it's not yet January, so it's looking like it's going to be a hard season for a lot of people.

Have a look at the flu map at http://www.google.org/flutrends/us/#US. You can click on your state and find see how things are going in your neck of the woods.

If you don't want to get a flu shot yourself you might want "get it for grandma". Older people (as well as the very young and anyone with a compromised immune system) are more at risk of the serious and potentially fatal effects of the flu. The more the rest of use are immunised the safer we'll all be.

If you're worried about catching the flu from the flu shot, don't. The flu vaccine is made from a killed vaccine and can't give you the flu. To find out more about this and other flu myths, have a read of http://mytakeontoday.wordpress.com/tag/cant-catch-flu-from-vaccine/.
