A Professor in Illinois seeking Kenyan participants for a study on attitudes towards seeking mental health services

A Kenyan professor in Illinois is seeking particpants for a study that seeks to investigate Kenyans’ attitudes towards seeking mental health services. According to Dr. Muthoni Kimemia, who is an Assistant Professor in the department of Educational
Psychology and Special Eduction at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, the study also seeks to investigate participants’ perception of the availability of social support to them in times of need.

The questionnaire should take about 20 minutes to complete.

The information obtained from this study will assist in validating the use of two instruments with Kenyan populations, namely, the MOS Social Support Questionnaire (Sherbourne & Stewart, 1991) and the Inventory of Attitudes Toward Seeking Mental Health Services (IASMHS; Mackenzie, Knox, Gekoski, & Macaulay, 2004).

Your participation will be a valuable contribution to the development of counseling, and will help to inform the continued development and improvement of mental health services for Kenyans.

Dr Kimemia does not anticipate any risks of physical, mental or emotional harm as a result of completing this survey.

Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time without any consequences. Your responses will be anonymous and will not be linked to you in any way.

All responses will be destroyed five years after completion of the research project. No identifying information will be used in any publications that arise from this work.

Completion and return of the survey indicate voluntary consent to participate in this study.

You will be contacted again with this request 2 times during the next twelve weeks. Because I have no way to link responses to individual participants, you will receive two additional requests to participate in this study.

For this reason, I request that you complete the survey only once. Thank you for your time and consideration. It’s only with the generous help of people like you that this research can be successful.
