We Stopped Florida State Government’s Attempt to Mess with Local Stewardship

Last week ORI stopped two bills that would have caused more nitrogen pollution of Florida’s waterways. We accomplished this feat with the help of your letters and by collaborating with local groups in Florida. Here is the story.

In late 2011, State decision makers submitted a bill (HB 421 and SB 604)that would allow limited-certified landscaping professionals to ignore local lawn fertilizer ordinances “like the one that bans the use of fertilizer during a four-month rainy season.”(Florida Independent) SB 604 received unanimous approval by Senate Agricultural Committee.

In January, Sarah Heard, Eddie Widder, George Jones, Cara Capp and others rallied in Stuart to stop the bill. Rallies also were held in two other FL locations, covered by local tv news stations. Rob Moir was interviewed on fertilizer problems and solutions for Indian River Lagoon.

On Feb 7, 2012, Senate Bill 604 was voted down by Environmental Preservation and Conservation committee 4 Nays to 3 Yeas.

On Feb 8, an article in the Florida Independent announced - “Fertilizer bill still facing tough opposition from environmentalists” (see quotes below). With the House version still alive, Ocean River Institute delivered 2,300 letters in opposition to the Representatives. Acknowledging the letters, the house members permanently tabled the bill.
