Last chance to donate in 2011 -- or help us to start 2012 right. Support Young Playwrights Inc.

Dear Friends,

When I entered what was left of Young Playwrights Inc. headquarters just after noon on November 20, I was prepared for the worst. An electrical fire at 1:00 a.m. had destroyed our home. The stench of the charred ruins was intense. I thought we had lost everything.

I was wrong. On that day we found that, although our office, rehearsal, and classroom space was gone, and with it all of our equipment and furnishings, our data backup had survived, as had the plays (wet, smoky, but intact) that had already arrived for the 2012 National Playwriting Competition. And in the days and weeks to come, we would find that our first post-fire commitment – to continue serving without interruption the young people who look to Young Playwrights Inc. as an artistic home – would be met with waves of support by the extended Young Playwrights Inc. family.

Despite the fact that our staff of four is now temporarily working from quickly established home offices (and a variety of wi-fi hotspots) and our programs are taking place at locations across the city, we are clearly moving forward, buoyed by the influx of notes from alums and friends reminding us how important Young Playwrights Inc. is to them. That’s what we think of as we prepare for the arrival of the nation’s top eight playwrights on January 4 for the annual Young Playwrights Conference or as we produce the Conference Readings Series that starts on January 9 on Cherry Lane Theatre’s mainstage. That’s what we remember as we facilitate playwriting workshops in schools across the state and beyond as well as our intensive Advanced Playwriting Workshop here at home. And as plays arrive daily in advance of the January 2nd national deadline, we look ahead to the March 1 deadline for Write A Play! NYC, and then to a proper celebration of our 30th anniversary.

So to protect all that we still have, I ask that make whatever donation you can afford, and, if finances allow, add something for our ‘phoenix fund’ to assist in the arduous process of rebuilding. Over the past 30 years Young Playwrights Inc. has weathered many storms, and we have no doubt that with your continued help we will be stronger than ever.

With sincere appreciation and with great hope for the New Year,

Sheri M. Goldhirsch
Artistic Director
