a5c7b9f00b The events of D-Day, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view.
Tells the story of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII. There are dozens of characters, some seen only briefly, who together weave the story of five separate invasion points that made up the operation.
The Normandy landings was one of the biggest military operations every undertaken. Capturing this in a single movie would be a great challenge. Unlike "saving private Ryan", "The longest day" is the story of the landings, not a story set during the landings.

It is perhaps overly ambitious, but when you consider that it was produced by the same person who was also making Cleopatra, then you will understand why it was attempted.

What we get is a lot of bad acting, as each big name star, who was paid only a small amount of money, tried their best to say what they hoped would be the most memorable line from the film.

There are some absolutely stunning visuals, great expansive continual shots of a different battles. These are interspersed with rather cheap, cheesy studio scenes.

My feeling is that the humour was forced in to make up for the stilted dramatic dialog. The result is rather uneven, but on par with the other big budget blockbusters of the time.

Like the big budget movies of today, it is both good and bad. It is not a classic. Some people praise this type of movie because it portrays the history of a moment, rather than impose a story in a historical context (it isn't saving private Ryan or pearl harbour). But ultimately the canvass is too big and the brush too small.

It also fails to provide a lot of the real facts for why things happened. One for people who like good old fashioned war movies.
First a correction in the credits, Red Buttons was Private Dutch Schultz, who gets caught on the steeple in the French Town of St. Mere-Eglise. Second one comment refers to John Wayne as a Captain, he was Lt. Colonel Benjamin Vandervroot, a battalion commander with the 82nd Airborne Division. This ensemble movie is a classic and inspiring story of D-Day. It successfully conveys the fog of war. It also shows that the most carefully planned battle still must rely on rapid improvisation. The production values are outstanding and as I write this comment, I feel myself on the Orne River Bridge with the British Glider forces and hear the bagpipes in the distance which means Lord Lovat and the commandos are near by to relive the company of glider-troops who must "Hold the Bridge, until Relieved." Private Ryan was the war on the level of the patrol, The longest day included the Invasion of Normandy from the individual service man to the memebers of the High Command on both sides.

D-Day changed all that.

Vandervoort broke his ankle when he jumped with his men outside St. Mere Eglise.

He fought through the crucial first 40 days of the invasion on his broken ankle side by side with his men.

"I'm playing the role with a simulated broken ankle, but the cold in the head is real," Wayne grumbled.

"This is unbelievable, though the way, Zanuck has recreated in every detail the atmosphere of D-Day," Wayne said.

The two-fisted actor has re-fought most of the major campaigns of the War in the Pacific in such screen epics as "Sands of Iwo Jim
