a5c7b9f00b In the year 3000, humanity is no match for the Psychlos, a greedy, manipulative race on a quest for ultimate profit. Led by the seductive and powerful Terl, the Psychlos are stripping Earth of its resources, using the broken remnants of humanity as slaves. What is left of the human race has reverted to a primitive state, believing the invaders to be demons and technology to be evil. After humanity has all but given up any hope of freeing themselves from alien oppression, a young man named Tyler decides to leave his desolate home high in the Rocky Mountains to discover the truth, whereupon he is captured and enslaved. It is then that he decides to fight back, leading his fellow man in one final struggle for freedom.
It's the year 3000 A.D.; the Earth is lost to the alien race of Psychlos. Humanity is enslaved by these gold-thirsty tyrants, whom are unaware that their 'man-animals' are about to ignite the rebellion of a lifetime.
It's the year 3000. Earth has long been conquered by the Psychlos. Humans are used as work slaves. Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (Barry Pepper) leaves his remote tribe to explore. He finds some surviving humans. The Psychlos capture him and others to use as slaves. Terl (John Travolta) is a Psychlo who is stuck on earth after crossing a senator. With new pay cuts coming to the labor force, Terl has the idea to train the human slaves to operate machinery and replace the paid labor. It's a secret and illegal initiative with the help of his second Ker (Forest Whitaker). They use a learning machine on Jonnie. Eventually Jonnie learns enough to start a revolt.

This is an universally panned movie and it deserves it. It is ugly looking. The plot is badly written. Travolta's acting is too ridiculous. The sad part is that all of them are deliberate choices. They are all simply wrong choices. There is a nugget of an interesting idea in here somewhere. Enslaved humanity revolting against an alien mining company could maybe work. Pepper is a pretty good actor but he's overwhelmed. Whatever hope this had is lost pretty quickly.
When I heard about this film, and what an utter shambles it was, I just knew I had to see it. Next to brilliant science fiction, nothing is more entertaining than utterly risible science fiction. In terms of "It's so bad it's good", only Kevin Costner's "The Postman" has come close to rivalling this for sheer entertainment in recent years. John Travolta, having come back from the dead in Pulp Fiction, chose to return there with this ill-advised career move. All that Scientology must have curdled his brain. Good science fiction is measured by its degree of scientific plausibility. The plausibility co-ordinates of BE are several million integers into the negative section of the graph. SPOILER. I particularly like the ludicrous ending, where a WWII fighter plane is flown through space, and manages to destroy the enemy planet which - get this - has an explosive atmosphere. Would that not render it susceptible to most forms of radiation? This film is hilarious. But stupid.
The film is Travolta's baby, but indifference and boredom is everywhere.
Yes, Battlefield Earth is loosely based on the novel of the same title by author and founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard. Originally intended to be a two-part move, Battlefield Earth depicts the first half of the novel. A sequel was intended to be made shortly after, but these plans
