a5c7b9f00b Soldiers Steve and Jim are friends but when their enlistment ends, Jim reenlists while Steve doesn't. Instead he takes an assignment to find the local gold rustlers. Robbing the stage and then the bank gets Steve into the gang where he plans a job that will capture the entire gang. But just as he is about to put his plan into action Jim arrives to arrest him.
Steve Hazard and Jim Ward, U. S. Cavalry sergeants Are constantly battling over girls, horses or anything that came up that had more than one side to it. On the day before their enlistment is up, a stagecoach is held up and robbed of the mine payroll. Among the passengers are Norman Brett, Dale Starr and Blain Cornwall. Miss Star has inherited the Emporium gambling palace from an uncle; Brett is a prominent mine owner, and Cornwall ostensibly is an assayer, but is, in reality a Treasury Department agent. Later, Jim, Steve and their pal "Chatter" get into trouble, Steve talks Jim in re-enlisting, but fails to do so himself, as does "Chatter." Jim is not a happy trooper at this turn of events. Cornwall enlists Steve to help him in his investigation and has Steve hold up a stagecoach, to enable him to join the bandit gang, which is headed by Brett, and abetted by Sam Ridgeway, who runs the Emporium for Dale. Jim, not knowing the reason for Steve's activities, trails him and he and Sergeant Dunne arrest Steve and "Chatter" and return them to Fort Rocky for jailing. This puts a crimp into Steve's plan to stop the holdup of the Army pay wagon by Brett and Ridgeway's gang.
"Boss of Boomtown" was the first of six compact 60 minute westerns from Universal starring Rod Cameron filmed for the 1944-45 season. Cameron was teamed with Tom Tyler in this one.

Cameron plays Steve Hazard and Tyler Jim Ward, two brawling cavalry sergeants with Fuzzy Knight along for comedy relief as Chatter-Box. The story concerns a series of hold-ups of local miner's gold ore and army payrolls by an unknown gang.

Treasury agent Cornwall (Sam Flint) enlists the help of Steve and Chatter-Box to infiltrate the gang and bring those behind the robberies (Jack Ingram, Robert Barron and Dick Alexander) to justice. Meanwhile Steve has tricked Jim into re-enlisting in the cavalry after their enlistment was up.

Both Steve and Jim have an eye on saloon owner Dale Starr (Vivian Austin) while mail order bride Minerva Sawyer (Marie Austin) has her sights set on Chatter-Box.

Universal's superior production values and the steady hand of veteran Director Ray Taylor gives us a compact little western as good as many of the higher budgeted westerns of the day.

As I mentioned earlier, Cameron and Tyler played well off each other. Both were accomplished action stars. Cameron had just done two serials for Republic and Tyler one at Columbia. But unfortunately, Tyler was replaced by Eddie Dew for the balance of the series. Tyler's health had begun to fail around this time and he was forced to take two years off from films. Cameron on the other hand was poised to move up to "A" list features following this series.
Canadian Rod Cameron had been around Hollywood for several years, as a contract-player for Paramount and Universal, and had starred in two of Republic's best, action-packed serials---1943's "G-Men vs. The B
