For Discussion: Officials Plan to Eliminate 170,000 Canada Geese in New York

An article in today's New York Times:
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/23/state-plans-to-eliminate-170000-canada-geese/

What are your thoughts, as a member of Ducks Unlimited?

Does the policy decision by NYC officials represent the best way to control the Canada goose population?

Do NY city and state regulations regarding firearms and hunting permits contribute to goose population sizes?

Should one state or municipality be able to influence the populations of migratory waterfowl that travel across state and international borders?

Should NY city or state governments do more to provide for protected wetland habitats for geese, to bring resources in line with populations, rather than restricting populations to align with limited natural resources?
