Your Support Can Bring Back the Talk Line!
As this year comes to a close, we ask you to consider making a donation to Backline in honor of all the women looking for conversation, connection and support around pregnancy, parenting, abortion and adoption.
You may have heard that our Talk Line, after five years of providing free nonjudgmental support to women and their loved ones across the United States and Canada, was temporarily suspended on September 1st. In a testament to the need for our unique services, Backline had experienced a tremendous increase in call volume over the past year – a rapid growth in demand that simply overwhelmed our capacity as an all-volunteer organization.
The decision to suspend the Talk Line was heart-wrenching on many levels, but we have been touched and energized by the outpouring of support for Backline in the past few months. We know that with your help, we will raise the $20,000 we need to reopen the Talk Line in early 2010. Your gift of $100, $500, $10 or $25 will bring us one step closer to this goal. Please make a donation today directly through Facebook or at !
Backline was started in 2004 by a group of women who saw a need to transcend politics and, instead, to recognize and honor the complexity and interconnectedness of women’s experiences around pregnancy, parenting, abortion and adoption. The first of its kind in the United States and Canada, our toll-free Talk Line was created to provide free, confidential and nonjudgmental support to women and their loved ones – before, during and after pregnancy.
Open every evening and on weekends, taking calls from across the United States and Canada, the Talk Line is answered by a team of well-trained volunteer Advocates. By August of this year Backline was receiving more than 500 calls a month, from women of every age, race, religion, and political party. Backline never wavered in our commitment to treating each caller with respect, supporting her process, and honoring the decisions that were best for her life and her family. These are just some of women who have sought out our services:
Emily is a full time student and single mother of two small children. Although confident in her decision to have an abortion, she called Backline the night before her appointment when she was feeling vulnerable and alone. She wondered if she could still be a good mother if she was choosing abortion for this third pregnancy, and had been told by those around her that she would feel “depressed” afterwards. She and the Advocate talked about the wide range of emotions that are normal following an abortion, and Emily reaffirmed all of the reasons she was sure that abortion was the right decision for her and her family. Emily was reminded that her decision not to bring another child into the world was made from a place of love, and hung up feeling confident that she was a strong person and dedicated parent.
Nora called Backline when she was 10 wks pregnant. Uncertain of what to do and with no family support, Nora was doubtful that any option – parenting, abortion or adoption – would work for her. After half an hour of unconditional listening and support, and an exploration of her fears, values, and concerns, Nora acknowledged that even though she was scared, she really wanted to continue the pregnancy and parent. Together, Nora and the Backline Advocate made a plan for her to find both the emotional support and the financial resources she would need to make this decision possible.
For the past five years, Backline has been humbled that so many agencies and clinics have referred their clients and patients to us. We know that those who count on us as a referral source (and the women who have counted on us for connection, conversation, and support) have missed our unique services and holistic approach to pregnancy, parenting, abortion and adoption.
We are working hard to bring the Talk Line back in early 2010 and to build the infrastructure that will sustain this vital program into the indefinite future....
Supporters are now helping to
Thank you so much for supporting Backline. Your donations make a real difference for the people who call us every day, and we hope we can rely on your support this year. In 2004, a group of women in Portland, OR came together with a vision of a new organization that would offer unconditional support across the spectrum of experiences with pregnancy, parenting, abortion, and adoption. From that…
Dear Friend, From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all your past support!
