State Budgets Cuts Could Have Catastrophic Impact on Mental Health Treatment in Ohio

We know there's a lot of this sort of thing going around -- possible cuts in support for libraries, and so on. It's happening because we are now entering the final days of the state budget process, and we have have to make some hard choices . . .
But/and this is a particular area of concern -- or alarm -- for families affected by mental illness across the state. Here's the story:
Last Friday afternoon, Governor Strickland held a press conference to outline his proposed framework for balancing the FY 10-11 State Budget. In Governor Strickland’s press conference he stated: “I do not believe that we can, in good conscience, make cuts that would eliminate the essential safety net services that Ohioans need now more than ever. So, in order to balance the budget we must reduce services that Ohioans have needed and received in the past but the state can no longer continue to provide. But in reducing these services, we must minimize the impact on our most vulnerable, especially children, the elderly and disabled.”
However, when reviewing the numbers, critical portions of Ohio’s safety net, including drug, alcohol and mental health services, are significantly cut. He proposes cutting community mental health services by $175 million over the biennium, community drug and alcohol addiction services by $21 million over the biennium and the Department of Aging’s Residential State Supplement line by $8.4 million over the biennium.
Behavioral health services are a part of the safety net for vulnerable Ohioans and must be protected! Please call the Governor’s Office and Legislative leaders TODAY and tell them that behavioral health services are important to Ohioans and funding for drug, alcohol and mental health services must be preserved!
