Doctors are already terrified to treat patients with severe, intractable pain and even in some cases terminal cancer patients with opioids, even when that treatment is considered part of best practices, because of the weaponization of the CDC guidelines and the targeting of physicians by the DEA. Opioids are a safe and effective treatment for moderate to severe pain for most individuals, when prescribed appropriately. Further legislation that intimidates doctors into not prescribing not only keeps the most vulnerable patients from receiving adequate treatment for their pain, but also limits their option to access any medical care at all. A recent study found that 40% of primary care doctors refuse to see patients with chronic pain at all. This bill would only serve to make the fallout for vulnerable patients even worse.
