Drug testing is an unnecessary invasion of privacy. It's insulting to welfare recipients to imply that the reason they need aid is an addiction. This also reinforces negative stereotypes about the poor. Additionally, it creates one more hurdle for someone with limited access to transportation to go one more place to get the test done, and makes it that much harder for them to find sustainable employment due to the time commitment required waiting in line at a testing facility. Additionally, states that have implemented this requirement have found that the vast majority of welfare recipients test negative for drug use anyway.
