Congress needs to go back to the days when it was a “privilege” to represent those who elected them. In 1789 they received $6/day they were in session. In 2019 dollars that would be $171.30. On average the House is in session 138 days, which comes to $23,639.40 per year and the senate is 162 days, which comes to $27,750.60. Congress did not have healthcare coverage or pension or any additional funds for transportation. Think how much money we would save annually, especially the benefits and pension gone. As Congress would need to have another job to support themselves, maybe they would be more inclined to get their job quickly to get back to their other job back home. They’re only required to be in session one day per year per the law.
