In the private sector, if I abruptly leave my job, I cannot insist that I maintain all my benefits since I would have broken the agreement that I made with my employer when I signed my employment agreement (which is to give 2 weeks notice). Why shouldn’t government workers held to the same standards. Why should one soldier receive special consideration over another. If Bergdal abandoned his post and retains his benefits, then they all should be allowed to leave and resume a civilian life with benefits whenever they disagree with something. The fact that he was captured ought not have nothing to do with it considering that a natural consequence of leaving his platoon and the protection inherent to being a part of it was his decision. They all wear the same uniform so as not to be treated differently from the others.
