College should be free. Then, students could learn what they need to learn without the distraction of having to feed, clothe, and house themselves, like rich people have. I grew up poor also, and find the popular sentiments such as “hard work is good for you”, or, “I pulled myself up by my bootstraps, you should too”, a load of garbage. How much farther along as a society would we be if we valued each other, provided each other with enough to live, learn, thrive, and create? I also grew up poor, but because federal education grants were more available, I was able to attend inexpensive college, and go on the a great medical school. I did not do this all by myself, as some would have others to believe. I worked hard, and so does everyone else. Sure, some poor people are lazy. I know plenty of rich lazy people too. Judgment, disrespect, and hate will be the end of our great country. Let’s fight that with everything we have. Food stamps for college students should be just the beginning. College, as healthcare, should be paid for through taxes, particularly on the wealthy.
