Ok let's just say one of these "law-abiding citizens" brings a gun to these areas. How will you know they are not ill intent? It's not like it's written on their faces "Hey, it's ok! I'm only on the defense." How many of these criminals did anyone see coming? I'm sure many of them looked like law-abiding citizens up until the last minute. Would more guns in the hands of "good people" really help? You say it yourself that the criminals will get guns either way. It's not hard to mistaken one over the other. In one scenario there is a good guy with a gun who sees something suspicious and reaches for his firearm. Someone else may see it as a possible attack and shoot without question. The other scenario is that a bad guy with a gun reaches for his gun and the bystander effect takes place in which others around thinks he is just defending against a possible threat. Would you really feel more comfortable and safe if everyone had a gun? I know I wouldn't. My belief is that more guns= more paranoia and that the NRA should be ashamed of themselves for how they respond to each violence that occurs behind the other side of a gun. I hope everyone will see that it's not about their safety, it's about the money that people are willing to pay out for a false security. I for one will not be needing nor supporting the eradication of gun fee zones. I will not let my freedom to live without guns be trumped by the 2nd amendment.
