I love dogs and cats. I also love the diversity that defined pre-Trump America. We should treat all animals with compassion. We should not slaughter endangered species. Aside from that, however, it seems inappropriate to have a federal law prohibiting the humane slaughter of certain animals for food just because they’re popular as pets. If Congress passed a law banning the slaughter of pigs and cows for food, I’d have to move to another country. There may be people in America who feel the same way about dog or cat meat. I may not want to accept a dinner invitation from them, but I certainly want to respect their personal liberties.
