While they are two very different periods in history the German government made a self conscious decision to prohibit and reference to Adolf Hitler or his Nazi party following that dark period of their history. The Civil War was a dark period in this nations history. However, many if not all monuments to CSA combatants or officers did not get put in place immediately following the war. They began showing up when Jim Crow and other repressive segregationist ideas were being supported by the states of the former CSA. It is disingenuous for anyone to claim "heritage" or family pride - pure and simple it was and is racism. Yes, there needs to be a disallowing of these symbols as political speech.
