No one should have to pay student loan interest. It’s well proven that education makes a person well rounded and able to think critically. This in turn elevates society as a whole, why should some people be let off the hook while others have to continue with crippling student loan debt? The more educated people are the better off we will all be. In the job market today, the requirements are for a person to have a bachelors degree for an entry level position. It’s almost impossible to be considered for positions otherwise and this in turn creates a demand for these degrees. If jobs require more education just to be considered, then education should be free. I’ve seen file clerk positions, where the main responsibility involve being able to organize information alphabetically and numerically( skills most of us acquire in elementary school) ,require a bachelors degree to even get a chance at an interview. It is ridiculous. Education can open the the door to a better future but not if people are shackled to their student loan debt until their retirement years. Some people may think that they don’t want to pay more taxes for other people’s kids to go to school. This is a valid point but I’d like to reframe the benefits to free education for all in this way: the tide lifts all boats. When people are better educated, they are able to make better informed decisions. They have more opportunities available to them and less likely to engage in crime. This, in turn, improves our communities and we’re able to have nicer things. This benefits us all. So the investment is really one you’re making for your community. It does no one any good, if it’s everyone for themselves and those less fortunate get pushed to committing crime just to get by. Punishment will not keep people from committing crime if we don’t provide a way out of poverty. This is why free post high school education should be important to all of us.
