The whole idea behind our democracy is discussion of varying opinions to come up with the best solution that helps everyone, not just one side. It is unconscionable that any bill that affects American people, particularly in big ways such as budget and healthcare, would not be debated on the Senate floor. How nice it would be if a quorum was required to actually listen to both sides as well. I often listen to Senate speeches on C-SPAN and the room is practically empty. I assume the speeches are for the benefit of the American people who are listening, because I have never seen the other party change it's stance on an issue. Their minds are made up and they refuse to listen. But hearings seem to carry more weight and give both sides clearly through testimony. Contrary to what FOXNews and the GOP keep telling us, the affordable care act was debated and hearings were held over a period of 18 months before a final vote. Perhaps the GOP can show the country the same respect and accept input from the Democrats. This is exactly what the Democrats stand with the ACA, adding GOP amendments. Country over party please.
