It is absolutely imperative, and the will of the American People, that Congress reduces the ever-growing budget deficits. The Fed Govt’s primary duty is to provide for national defense. Every penny of defense funding is needed, plus more. It is so immature and arbitrary that Democrats demand more domestic spending just because it is necessary to increase defense spending; seriously what kind of logic is that? It contributes to NOTHING except more waste, fraud, and abuse of tax dollars.
The national debt has been building for decades and will always exist simply because we have programs like Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid that are fiscally unsustainable. But, we need to start reducing and eventually eliminating yearly budget shortfalls. Keep defense spending high, with marginal increases each year. Drastically cut funding for federal housing programs, which are some of the most abused and wasteful of all tax funded expenditures. Reform Medicaid and other social programs to truly cut down on the waste (work requirements for ABLE BODIED SINGLE ADULTS).
Increase the Medicare retirement age on a sliding scale so that people like me, who still have decades to go until retirement, won’t retire until we are 68-70. Allow for private options for Medicare as well.
Colleges should be made responsible for 50% of defaulted student loans; thus giving them skin in the game incentivizing much better education, drastically lowering rates of student loan defaults, and reducing government spending on this front.
Last but not least, we MUST reform Social Security to ensure it is around for my generation and to lessen it’s burdensome spending impact. Increase the retirement age over time, stop giving SS to multimillionaires who don’t need it, allow for private pension plans to replace for some Americans, eliminate it for government officials and employees who already get taxpayer funded pensions, and allow for more personalized management of individual SS retirement benefits. If we can actually have some bipartisan, common sense changes like these made wherein lawmakers are willing to make tough, but necessary decisions we can get our fiscal health back with little to no economic downside.
