Reducing congressional pay to $1 after 12 years in office will only make elected officials game the system and take payoffs from special interest at an even greater rate than they already do. Instead I suggest we pay our representatives a reasonable salary but enact strict laws that would send them to prison if they are found to have profited off of any dealings with special interest groups, lobbyists, or through passing a bill. This includes kickbacks, “donations”, round about deals that back channel money to the representative or their, or a relation’s, business interests. We should also pass legislation that says once they leave office they can in no way be involved in lobbying. In making the job less desirable because it will be less lucrative and strictly regulated we will have more likelihood of attracting public servants than the power hungry who see the position as a way to set themselves up for life.
