Many of the statements opposing a Federal Housing Policy are lacking a basic understanding of housing history in this county and its vital significance. Descent shelter is a fundamental human necessity. We must soberly understand that the free market optimizes for efficiency and profit. It neglects need. There can be no pure market solution unless you're willing to accept slums such as those found in Rio de Jeniro, Seweto and Mumbai. They are exactly what occurs when there are no regulations, zoning, subsidies and the free market reigns. As others have stated there is a significant percentage of people who work hard and work multiple jobs but still don't earn enough to afford decent housing. Federal programs require individuals provide their share of income. Zero income households are hounded unmercifully to show why they have no income. National databases are used to check whether the household has any income they're hiding. Those who oppose these policies are not familiar with them and speak from a philosophical position not factual.
