Putting addicts in jail doesn’t do anything other than largely increase the deficit, there’s no rehabilitation and most jails have scrapped educational programs, they’ll come out just as addicted as when they went in, with little or no improvement and jails are actually better at producing more competent criminals than rehabilitating them, it’s kind of like a college for crime, you learn what works what doesn’t work, join a gang and come out much better at breaking the law without being detected also every minute police waste on addicts is another minute a kidnapper or murderer has to get away, there’s a reason we have so many cold cases and it’s pretty much drug crime takes up enough time and resources, that a lot of people get away with far more heinous crimes. Portugal legalized drugs and drug use dropped significantly. If you don’t want to legalize drugs or stop prosecution the only real answer is mandatory rehab instead of jail sentences
