When it comes down to it, the most important factor is this—
I think we can all agree the largest concern of people opposed to those who identify as transgendered, gay, non-binary, pansexual, queer, or who, in a society where expressing gender norms “opposite” to what their physical features suggest they “should” be, is that it is simply biologically and physically unnatural and cannot be biologically supported, etc.
To that I say this—I am an openly gay man myself, and I agree with you. I’m not sold on the idea of “born this way” nor am I on any sort of “gay gene.” Biologically, physically—not normal, man + woman = baby. Baby = life = survival. Right? Yes.
BUT. Not so fast.
Have we forgotten the very reasoning we’ve supported? Some things may not be “natural” physically, but let us not forget the importance of the mind.
Psychology and neurology are also considered (widely agreed upon as) nature. So maybe it’s true, sometimes the physical factors don’t add up but if we could open our minds (the literal reason humans have evolved and survived this long in the first place) one can see that we are not limited to physical means of evolution anymore. Times are changing and quick. With access to information at our fingertips, and as human connection grows stronger and closer by the day, our brains have been exponentially learning faster and faster. Those around my age, we’ll say college students, are taking in as much information in one day as our college-aged grandparents took in over the course of one month.
More info, more thoughts, more ideas—more room for growth. That’s nature. That’s natural.
We’re finally being able to process thoughts in many different ways—albeit our minds may be a bit ahead of our time, and with no choice of our own, which is where the uncertainly comes from. We haven’t figured it all out quite yet either. But it’s very real, and very important.
And it will not be held in any longer.
We’ve got a lot to learn, and we should do so by taking the first step—growing, learning, and working together. 🙂
