I grew up in the South and we commemorated many Civil War events. We had plenty of statues and monuments too. We also had Jim Crow laws, KKK marches, and cross burnings. Black citizens were second class citizens and very often intimidated. They were also segregated in our schools. For right or wrong, Civil War memorabilia such as statues and the Confederate flag are symbols associated with all of that hatred and bigotry. While we shouldn't try to erase history and the lessons it teaches us, neither should the government promote or idolize it. The same would be true for Nazi or ISIS flags.
