For a MISDEMEANOR "hate" crime? This is ridiculous. Any utterance by any individual that is merely assumed by others to be antagonistic to another person based on race, religion (except, of course, when insulting Christians and white males), gender, etc., can result in a misdemeanor "hate" crime conviction, even without a jury trial, and even if the individual used a word that is NOT an insult to others. (Does anybody remember the outrage and uproar because a municipal public official used the word "niggardly" and many of this country's ignorant and illogically-outraged masses had no clue what that word means?) To condemn for all time that individual, based on a word used in anger or one that is misunderstood, is unfair, unjust, excessively punitive, and inane. If that were to be a law, over half the people who enter comments at the end of each "news" item on the internet will be in serious trouble, as would any angry nitwit upon being awarded a speeding ticket and spewing his/her verbal venom against the arresting officer. This bill is typical of political opportunism. There should not exist any "hate" crime legislation at all, and this proposed bill exemplifies what some politicians will do to erode our Constitutionally-guaranteed rights any chance they get.
