Without question, yes. The most effective (and cruel) way to turn a non-violent offender and otherwise law-abiding citizen into a violent, asocial, and dissociated member of our society is to lock them in a cage surrounded by ACTUAL criminals with propensities for destructive and dangerous behaviors. Our country has less than 5% of the world's population but around a quarter of it's incarcerated persons, the majority of whom are serving drug-related sentences. Our penal system claims to be centered on 'rehabilitation' and not 'punishment.' Does anyone actually believe that? Violent, dangerous offenders deserve to be imprisoned, but to assign sentences of similar severity for drug possession and crimes such as rape and assault is simply absurd.
