The electoral college is an outdated idea. It clearly has failed to serve the purpose originally intended to protect our nation from an unfit President with massive foreign entanglements, both personal and economic. It has instead become a tool for the tyranny of the minority to force their agenda on this nation. The arguement that "urban areas would always elect the President" is, at best, a specious game of three card Monte in which an attempt is made to distract people from a basic fact - The President is meant to represent the entirety of America. Therefore, each citizen's vote should count equally. The job of Congress is to represent each specific State and each area within those states. To illustrate the problem with the electoral college assume a hypothetical bill appears before the President. Joe, who lives in New York opposes the bill. Sue, who lives in rural Wyoming supports it. Both Sue and Joe send emails to the President. Since Sue's vote is weighted four times as much as Joe's vote in his reelection campaign which constituent do you think will get the most attention. Clearly, although Joe and Sue have every right to expect the President to weigh their opinions equally, the electoral college has disenfranchised Joe by giving Sue four times his power. It really is that simple.
